Art therapy employs art making from various mediums such as painting, photography, drawing, sculpture and other types of visual expression. The process of art is taught to the client in a therapeutic way. This is done through creating a professional relationship between individuals experiencing illnesses, life challenges and severe trauma with their art therapist. This helps to improve a person's mental, emotional and the physical well being.

When engaging in the process of artistic creativity and finding new ways of expressing themselves artistically, these individuals are assisted to manage their stress, to resolve issues in a better way, to control their emotions and to improve their awareness and self esteem. One doesn't have to be talented in arts to use art therapy because there are professionals who are well trained and who can help you learn to convey various messages through your art work.

The advantage of using art therapy is that it enables clients to reveal themselves without using words. Clients can express the deeply rooted feelings that they may never have actually been able to communicate with language. It offers an opportunity for self discovery. It's likewise appropriate for those individuals who find it very challenging or impossible to reveal their feelings and ideas vocally.

The patients going through these sessions are able to develop interpersonal skills and gain new insights. By the end of their therapy, most patients do manage to cope with the symptoms of traumatic experiences and stress.

Art therapists work with all groups of individuals. This can include children, adults, teens and the elderly. These people could be experiencing various forms of diseases, problems and handicaps. These include psychological health issues, erratic emotional behaviors, physical or learning handicaps, neurological conditions, life restricting conditions or physical illnesses. Art therapy can also help them to boost their intellectual capabilities.
