What Child Psychiatrists In NYC Do

By Marci Glover

Child psychiatry is a subdivision in the field of psychiatry that specializes in studying, diagnosing, treating, and preventing psychopathological disorders in kids, adolescents, and their families. Child psychiatrists in NYC are highly specialized in clinical investigation of how psychiatric disorders in kids respond to interventions. The investigation covers demographic, biologic, psychosocial, genetic, and environmental factors. As early as 1883 there were several people in different nations doing studies about psychiatric disorders in kids.

This field categorizes disorders into numerous categories including gender identity, development, eating, psychotic, mood, anxiety and disorders of habit and attention. Development disorders encompass of learning capability and Asperger disorder. Disorders of mood include bipolar issues and depression. Disorders in habit and attention encompass attention deficit hyperactivity, conduct, and oppositional defiant. Anxiety disorders include obsessive compulsive, phobias, and panic problems.

The psychiatrist works with the affected child in arriving at the solution of the problem and shares the decisions with the parents. The first step is normally to conduct a deep diagnostic examination to understand the current situation. Close attention is given to peer, family, emotional, cognitive, social, developmental, and educational components. The solution does not come from the practitioner alone, but it is a team effort between the client and the psychiatrist.

The process involves several other parties like family members, juvenile courts, former personal physicians, and teachers in some cases. Normally the practitioner is expected to do all the activities they do in the best interest of the client in question. Client assessment involves a mental state examination. To get a conclusive solution, psychiatric and illness history of parents and grandparents is obtained.

Affected individuals have many treatment options that can be administered to them. More than one option is administered at times. Common options for treatment are problem-solving, cognitive-behavior, family, psychodynamic, problem-solving, and behavior therapies. Conventional medication might be administered and parents placed under training. All external influences like pediatricians, schools, juvenile courts, primary care physicians, and social agencies are also informed on decisions made.

In NYC, for a person to qualify and establish a career in child and adolescent psychiatry, they need to complete four years of studies in a medical school. This should then be followed by another three years of approved residency training in neurology, medicine, and general adult psychiatry. Another period of two years training in child psychiatry is also required. One must show a high level of competency in adult psychiatry before they are allowed to go for training in this sub-division.

After going through the entire training and successfully completing, one becomes eligible for taking the certification examination. This examination is administered by two bodies in America, that is, ABPN and AOBNP. Once one passes the examination, they receive a license to seek employment or to start their own centers for dispensing psychiatric services to the public.

Not knowing where to search can make psychiatrists with specialty in children very difficult to find. Departments of psychiatry in medical training institutions, mental health associations, medical centers, and hospitals are some of the best locations ask from. More information should be gathered about a practitioner before requesting for their services.
