In the modern world, it is a requirement that licensed clinical social workers (LCSW) engages in continuing education units (CEUs) that keep them abreast with the current issues facing the society. For this reason, state governments set up state boards that deal with the licensing of social workers. Such boards design specific courses that must be completed to qualify for renewal of the practicing licenses. With many LCSW CEUs certificates currently available, the social worker must balance the state board requirements and the work environment requirements before settling on particular CEUs to take.

Licensed Clinical Social Workers are mental health professionals and are required to have Masters Degree in the related social work as the minimum qualification. In schools, these social workers considers taking courses in areas such as adolescence, child abuse, teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, withdrawal, sexuality, self harming, neglect and depression among many others. The story goes for those working as community counselors and all other areas of work where they are engaged.
