In life, everyone is searching for something. Most people are simply looking for basic needs to help them live from one day to the next. Those who can afford basics are looking for fulfillment in other spheres of their lives such as love and companionship, power, fame and so on. Abraham Maslow is the psychologist credited with arranging human needs in hierarchical order with the most basic of needs being at the bottom and self actualization occupying the apex. One of the definitions of self actualization is the state of having full realization of intellectual social and creative potential of a person. No one individual is exactly the same as the other with regard to personal abilities and so the state of actualization will vary. A person can only strive for this peak of they have taken care of their basics such as physiological needs, safety, affection and self esteem.

Not many people get to be actualized but among those that have been lucky enough to get to this level, there are a number of characteristics that are evident. One of these characteristics is that the individuals in question are courageous. They are not afraid of venturing into unfamiliar territory but instead want to be the first to pass through the unravelled path. As a result, they are able to exploit their potential fully.

Another important attribute is that they have a purpose. Having a mission in life provides the motivation to work harder at what we do and improve ourselves in the process. While the quest for to be actualized is more of an individual goal, missions leading to it are often for the good of mankind in general. Once we identify what our mission is, we need to consider it a duty or an obligation that should be fulfilled regardless of the challenges that come our way.

Actualized persons have also been known to readily accept themselves in spite of their flaws. There can only be one version of a given individual in this world. Even if you have some shortcomings, try to remain authentic rather than pretending to be that which you are not. If living with a negative habit or behaviour the goal should be to change for the better. This cannot happen, however, if the negative attribute is not acknowledged and accepted.

Having a vision is instrumental in achieving any given goal in life including the goal to become actualized. A vision is the compass which helps us to keep aligned to our destination at all times. It helps one to remain focused on the bigger picture and avoid unnecessary distractions. Such a high level of focus and personal discipline is instrumental in overcoming challenges that may crop up from time to time.

One should focus on personal growth rather than merely the satisfaction of needs. Personal growth often comes in small improvements in skills and knowledge every day. With time, these small improvements move an individual closer to perfection. One should be grateful for the small victories received from time to time and use this as a motivation to keep achieving more and more.

Actualization is the pinnacle need whose attainment is a journey. One only gets to this point when they maximize their potential while doing the best of what they can do. One can never use another individual as a reference for what it means to reach this peak. The different genetic characteristics and the variations in our environment shape our perception of what this pinnacle need is.
