All About Dialectical Behavior Therapy In NYC

There are numerous mental health disorders that affect people of all ages. One of them is borderline personality disorder characterized by suicidal feelings, difficulty forming stable relationships, impulsiveness, loneliness and depression. There are four components that form dialectical behaviour treatment. They include, individual treatment, skills training, phone coaching and consultation teams. In training groups, treatment comprises of groups with a team leader and students. Here clients learn how to enhance the behavioural skills with the other members of the group. The leader gives the students homework to practice their skills further and hold weekly meetings that may take up to 24 weeks.

Individual therapy is focused on a single client and aims at motivating them to use skills learnt to solve specific challenges and events in their lives. This type of therapy takes place once a week and runs concurrently with the other components of the treatment program. The third component, phone coaching focuses on teaching clients skills to cope with situations at the moment through a telephone call.

Therapist consultation team is a type of therapeutic treatment for DBT providers. It helps therapists stay motivated and competent to do their best to provide treatment to their patients. Their meetings are weekly and comprise individual therapists and group leaders all bound by the same commitment, responsibility and care towards their patients. In all these classes, therapists instill skills of mindfulness, learning to tolerate distress, regulating emotions and interpersonal effectiveness.

In a DBT program, mindfulness, toleration of distresses, regulating emotions and interpersonal effectiveness are the skills taught to clients. They are categorized into change-oriented and acceptance oriented skills. Mindfulness and distress tolerance comprise acceptance skills. While the rest comprise change skills. While acceptance skills teach clients what to accept to do for them to reach their objectives whereas, change skills teach clients teach clients what to change. Together these skills comprise of integration of opposites which is the foundation of the dialectical treatment program.

Acceptance and change-oriented skills comprise the integration of opposite upon which the dialectic treatment method is based. The method uses a four hierarchy model for treating patients. The first to be addressed is life threatening behaviour such as non-suicidal self-injury or suicidal thoughts. Before any other problem can be addressed the therapist must formulate ways of protecting the clients life.

The next treatment on the priority list is therapy interfering behaviours. This set of behaviour interferes with effective treatment and includes things like lateness to the session or non-collaboration. The next category of treatment addresses behaviour that interferes with the clients quality of life such as relationship problems and mental disorders which blurs their judgement and overall decision making.

Dialectic therapy has helped many clients suffering from borderline personality disorder. It is effective in suicidal behaviour and non-suicidal self-injury as well as cases of substance abuse depression and anger. Eventually clients are able to live a normal life.
