Borderline Personality Disorder And DBT In NYC

By Roger Stewart

There are a number of treatments for different psychological conditions. When it comes to Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD, ) there is a new process known as DBT in NYC. While this therapeutic process uses a number of traditional applications, the main focus is on helping clients who have a tendency toward harming oneself or whom have suicidal tendencies.

In most cases, therapists in New York will focus on symptomatic issues rather than the root cause of the problem. While this can be effective, this new therapy takes a different approach. For, this application, unlike other therapies helps individuals create a life worth living as part of the process.

Although it has taken years of research and development, many therapists now provide and support this treatment. One reason the application works for those with and without mental illness is the cognitive aspect of the application. Using cognition therapy along with mindfulness, emotional control, crisis management and interpersonal relationship skills, a client often benefits whether the conditions for anxiety and depression are internal or externally based.

The therapy can also be used to treat others whom do not suffer from mental illness. As such, while mental illness has always been the prime focus of the application, those with eating disorders, addiction or substance abuse may also find the process beneficial. As the process focuses on teaching individuals and families that life is worth living, many lives have been saved in the process.

Behavior modification is also an aspect of this new therapy. For, unless individuals using this application can learn to meditate, react appropriately when provoked, build better relationships and live in the moment, it can often be difficult to manage life. As a result, the combination of these different therapeutic applications often help individuals learn how to do so.

Those providing this treatment focus on teaching meditation, regulation of emotions, tolerance in times of distress, and interpersonal effectiveness. After which, most individuals can find it easier to appreciate and live life to the fullest. In doing so, individuals learn how to focus attention on reality in the moment rather than past of future concerns. In most cases, these group sessions are offered at a nominal fee, though while rare, there may be some scholarship money available from time to time.

Individuals looking to provide this service must participate in group training sessions which take approximately 4 months to complete. As there are four different adult training sessions, 4 youth training and sessions and a family session, those attending the training can often chose to complete all or part of the training at once. In cases where an individual desires to complete all four processes in all four areas, it can often take a few extra weeks to a month to complete these requirements.

When it comes to training, individuals must complete the following modules. These include, mindfulness which is considered the core skill of the practice, emotion regulation in order to learn how emotions work, distress tolerance in which the individual learns about crisis management within interpersonal relationships. Once this training is complete, the individual can then teach others the basic practices and philosophies while also providing much needed care and support.
